Safety Solutions for Wildlife Vehicle Collisions on Idaho’s US 20 and SH 87
Cramer, P. 2016. Safety solutions for wildlife-vehicle collisions on Idaho’s US 20 and SH 82. Report prepared for Idaho Transportation Department, Rigby Idaho. 166 pages. Included an interactive map for the public.
This study was conducted to determine the specific locations and actions necessary to improve motorist safety on US 20 and SH 87 by reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) with solutions that also provide movement opportunities for wildlife across the two highways. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) worked with the author, Idaho Fish and Game Department (IDFG), the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), non-profit and wildlife research organizations, and Henry’s Fork Legacy Project (HFLP) members to first identify zones of wildlife-vehicle conflict on the highways, second to identify the best solutions for those zones, and third, to prioritize those actions. The results of this research were based on the best available information on wildlife, land ownership and management, recreation sites and trails, and road infrastructure such as existing bridges and speed limits. Assessing the Impact of Interstate 84 on the Sublett Mule Deer Herd in South Central Idaho, U.S.A.
Schwender, M., and P. Cramer. 2012. Assessing the impact of Interstate 84 on the Sublett mule deer herd in south central Idaho, U.S.A. Final Report to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, Jerome, Idaho. 43 pages.
Interstate 84 (I-84) was constructed and opened in south central Idaho in 1969 and the vehicle traffic has been a barrier to wildlife movement ever since. The study assessed a three-mile stretch of I-84 where wildlife attempt to cross the interstate to determine if mule deer and other wildlife species were attempting to use three existing box culverts placed for ranch use, and if wildlife were attempting to cross the interstate at grade. The report developed recommendations for future adaptive management and construction to facilitate wildlife movement below I-84. Click on the cover image for an automatic download of the report.
